About 2.7 thousand Moscow high school students chose classes in sections and fitness centres instead of traditional physical education lessons. This is almost half of students in grades 10–11 from 18 Moscow schools.
This was the official website of the mayor of Moscow, citing the press service of the capital’s Department of Education and Science. This opportunity appeared for students thanks to the pilot project “Lesson section”, which started at the beginning of the school year.
It allows high school students to choose either school physical education lessons or to engage in any state or commercial sports section, as well as go to group or individual training in a fitness club.
It is clarified that most often teenagers instead of the usual physical education classes chose sections on football, basketball and volleyball. The pilot lesson section will last until the end of the school year, and nine more Moscow schools should join it in November. The results will begin to be summed up in June 2020.
The project allows children not only to save time but also to realize themselves in sports without increasing the academic load. At the same time, a high school student can choose any section – from football and volleyball to badminton and chess. For classes in a section or fitness centre, children receive an assessment of physical education.
