Advent Festival Presents Bach’s Christmas Oratorio

Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” will be performed at the VI International Advent Festival in Moscow, on January 4-5, in Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral.

In the European Christian tradition, Advent is the time before Christmas, indicating a joyful expectation of a holiday. This year, the Advent festival will present the performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.

Bach created the Christmas Oratorio (“Weihnachts-Oratorium”), in 1734 using musical material from his previous compositions, which was generally accepted musical practice in the Renaissance and Baroque. The oratorio was designed according to the author’s intention to be performed one at a time at Christmas services from December 25 to January 6.

The debut of the famous Russian group, the State Academic Symphony Orchestra, will take place in collaboration with the Intrada vocal ensemble and an international quartet of soloists – Russian Julia Lezhneva, German mezzo-soprano Verena Uzeman, Icelandic tenor Benedict Kristyansson and lead singer of Helikon-Opera Stanislav Shvets.
