Almost Half Russian Gas Importers Opened State Bank Accounts for Ruble Payments

About half of the importers of Russian gas have already opened accounts with Gazprombank (GPB) to pay under the new scheme, as said by the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak, at the “New Horizons” forum of the “Knowledge” Russian society.

“This is a forced measure, it was aimed at ensuring the safety of our export earnings. As you know, today various actions of the European authorities, the United States of America lead to risks in relation to export earnings. Therefore, when we transfer to payment in the national currency, it reduces these risks. And this is the most important principle,” he said.

Novak added that more than 50 companies, large, medium, and small ones, buy Russian gas. Of these, about half have already opened accounts with the GPB for payment under the new scheme.

“About 54 companies have contracts with Gazprom Export – large, medium, small. According to my data, about half of this number has already opened special accounts in our authorized bank, currency and ruble accounts, in order to ensure the receipt of foreign currency earnings and its conversion into rubles and payment for gas supplied in rubles,” he added.

He noted that Gazprom has the exact figures, which “will be clear in the near future,” as the payment deadlines for the main contracts are coming soon.

“Although there is evidence that some large companies have opened accounts, paid or are ready to pay. There are certain payment dates, there are advances, there is an advance payment, there is an actual payment for the gas supplied. This mechanism is quite stretched in time. The final payment for April deliveries takes place in May and in the coming days we will see the final list of those who paid in rubles and who refused to pay,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
