Nowadays, there are about 30 thousand capercaillies live in the Chelyabinsk region. The weight of these birds can reach 7 kilograms. Scientists believe that in the ice age, the plumage of the capercaillie was light, and then darkened. Capercaillie swallows small pebbles when eating to digest hard foods. The stomachs of these birds usually contain up to two thousand stones.

Capercaillie loves snow, which helps them survive the cold. In the evening, birds fall from the tree into the snowdrifts and sleep there until the morning. During a sharp cooling, they can not get out from under the snow for days. There is a problem that if a snowdrift is covered with a thick crust of ice, they cannot get out of it. Nevertheless, their wings are similar to snowshoes, which increase the area of support and helps them to move.
