According to the state forest register, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, every year about 3 thousand cubic meters of timber are illegally harvested.
Forests occupy more than 3.9 million hectares in the Nizhny Novgorod region or 53% of the region. The total stock of wood is 573 million cubic meters. Annually 4 million cubic meters are procured with a permissible 7 million cubic meters.
At the same time, the volume of illegal logging on forest lands in the region’s forest fund in 2017 amounted to 2, 9 thousand cubic meters, for 2018 – 3.8 thousand cubic meters, over the past period of 2019 – 2 thousand cubic meters.
The problem is recognized in the forestry department of the Nizhny Novgorod region, however, they cannot take any measures there, since the issue of increasing the staff of forest inspectors is the responsibility of the federal body.
Citizens are connected to forest protection. They compensated for the lack of professional patrols in the forests of the Nizhny Novgorod Region in the regional forestry department at the expense of activists.
In November, it was announced that everyone could join the ranks of public forest inspectors. It is assumed that residents of the districts, as part of voluntary squads, together with specialists from the territorial inspectorates will monitor the order in the forests.
