The mysteries of the Chelyabinsk meteorite still concern scientists from all over the world. Recently it became known about one more of its secrets – a mineral not previously seen was found in the meteorite, the correspondent of the site cheltv.ru reports.
A study of one of the fragments of the meteorite was carried out at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in the city of Dubna near Moscow. As a result, its employees discovered an alloy of iron and nickel in the asteroid – the so-called kamacite. To determine this was used the method of neutron diffraction, adiography and tomography, well as optical methods.
According to scientists, their discovery is very significant, it is very important for understanding, modelling and predicting the processes that occur when an asteroid collides with the surface of the planet. It also helps to calculate the possible consequences and the damage that this event may cause.
