Cold Alert: Russian Regions Expect Increase in Danger Level due to Abnormal Cold

In Moscow and the Moscow region, due to abnormal cold weather, an “orange” level of weather danger has been declared, which will be in effect from 9 pm on January 5 to 9 pm on January 7. The Hydrometeorological Center of Russia warned about this on Thursday and named other regions of Russia where the weather will hit low temperature records. 

It is reported that abnormally cold weather is expected during the above-mentioned period — the air temperature may drop by 9–17 degrees below the climatic norm. According to the Hydrometeorological Center, on January 5 in the afternoon in Moscow, the air temperature varies in the range from -6 to -4 degrees. At night, the thermometer will drop to -22 degrees.

Also, a drop in temperature to minus 48-53 degrees was predicted for residents of Yakutia, the Magadan Region, and Chukotka. In Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrugs it will be up to 45-47 degrees below zero.

Up to 30-37 degrees of frost from January 5 to 9 is expected in the Arkhangelsk Region and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, up to 30-39 degrees in Komi, up to 26 degrees in Karelia, up to 33 degrees in the Vologda Region, and up to 23-25 degrees in St. Petersburg.

From January 7 to 9, there will be frosts of up to 17-19 degrees in the Astrakhan region, and up to 15-17 degrees in the Rostov region. In the Sverdlovsk region, from January 5 to January 9, the temperature is expected to drop to minus 34 degrees, in the Chelyabinsk region — to minus 33-34 degrees, and in the Kurgan and Tyumen regions — to minus 25-30 degrees.
