Choosing a safe and tasty watermelon or melon requires a number of rules, the Federal Consumer Rights Protection Service (Rospotrebnadzor) experts reported. They emphasized that people are not recommended to buy melons at retail outlets located along the roads, as then they can absorb heavy metals contained in the exhaust gases of cars.
It is noted that the point of sale should be equipped with a canopy, fence, and shelves for storing goods. The watermelon should have a bright contrasting colour of the crust, hard to the touch, a light spot on the side, and a dry stem. The melon should emit a pleasant smell and a dull sound when clicked. The opposite side of the tail should be slightly soft, which is a sign of maturity. Immediately before cutting, the melons are recommended to be washed with warm water and soap. It is specified that cut watermelons and melons should be stored only in a refrigerator.
