The adoption of the NATO strategy on deterring Russia demonstrated the correctness of the decision of the Russian authorities to terminate the dialogue with the alliance, as stated by the Press Secretary of Russian President Dmitry Peskov.
Recently, the alliance member countries agreed on the Concept of Deterrence and Defence in the Euro-Atlantic Space, which is a strategic plan to protect against a potential attack by Russia on several fronts. The concept sets the main goal of the alliance – the containment of Russia, despite the growing attention to China. As specified, the strategy is aimed at preparing for a simultaneous attack in the Baltic and the Black Sea regions, which may include nuclear strikes, hacking of computer networks and an attack from outer space.
“We know the essence of this alliance, this is exactly the confirmation of this essence. This alliance is not created for peace, the alliance is created for confrontation. It was conceived, designed, and gathered for confrontation. It fulfils its function,” Peskov noted.
The Presidential Spokesman also stated that the Russian side has never had any illusions about NATO and the alliance’s adoption of a strategy to contain Russia confirms the correctness of Russian steps to abandon the idea of an official dialogue.
“This simply confirms in the clearest way the correctness of the decisions of the Russian Federation made a few days earlier on the termination of the dialogue with NATO. Dialogue is not needed. Russia has never had illusions about NATO. We know the essence of the alliance — it was created for confrontation. The Russian Federation takes measures to protect its own interests. This is an ongoing process,” the Press Secretary explained.
