In 2021, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kazan were named the most comfortable megacities in Russia for living, according to the Ministry of Construction and the Dom.RF Development Institute.
Analysts have calculated the the urban environment quality index for 1,117 Russian settlements. The cities were grouped by population: the biggest (from one million people), bigger (from 250 thousand to a million people), big (100-250 thousand people), medium (50-100 thousand people). The category of small was divided into three: 25-50 thousand people, 5-25 thousand, and up to 5 thousand residents.
Locations were evaluated according to 36 criteria, including landscaping, the state of public transport, road safety, and the quality of public spaces. It was possible to score 360 points as much as possible, and an indicator above 180 points was considered a comfortable urban environment.
Thus, Moscow became the most favorable city for living with a million people, gaining 293 points. The second place was taken by St. Petersburg with 256 points, and the third, by Kazan with 210. Nizhny Novgorod (209) and Rostov-on-Don (208) also entered the top five among megacities. The most comfortable “bigger” cities for life were Tyumen (233), Grozny (233), Sochi (229), Yaroslavl (228), and Belgorod (226).
Reutov (268), Dolgoprudny (243), Lyubertsy (241), Veliky Novgorod (241), and Krasnogorsk (240) became the leaders among “not big” towns, while Kudrovo (260), Tutaev (239), Istra (237), Staraya Russa (237), and Mozhaysk (235) appeared to be the best ones among small towns.
According to analysts, in 2021, the share of Russian cities with a favorable environment increased by 10 percentage points, to 44 per cent. The number of cities with a favorable environment amounted to 490, which is 115 cities more than last year.
