Instagram and Facebook were officially banned in Russia by a court of Moscow, which recognized the American company Meta as an extremist organization.
“To satisfy the claims of the Prosecutor General’s Office to ban the activities of the Meta company,” Judge Olga Solopova announced the decision that comes into force immediately.
On March 11, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia sent an application to the court to recognize Meta as an extremist organization and demanded to ban its work on the territory of Russia. Facebook and Instagram illegal calls for violence against Russian military personnel were the reason to open the case by the Investigative Committee against the corporation.
On March 21, representatives of the corporation stated that the Russian courts had no right to consider the relevant application of the Prosecutor General’s Office and asked to stop the proceedings in the case, claiming that the corporation was not given enough time to prepare the position. However, the court refused to postpone the process and banned Meta.
