Kremlin Promised Mirror Response to Extension of EU Sanctions Against Russia

Russia will take mirror measures in response to the decision of the EU to extend anti-Russian sanctions imposed over Ukraine, as stated by the Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.

At the EU summit on December 16, it was decided to extend sanctions against Russia. The sanctions, which have been in effect for more than seven years since July 2014 following the political crisis in Ukraine and Crimea rejoining Russia, were voted for once again by the leaders of the EU countries, so the decision was made for their prolongation, as stated by the EU Council President Charles Michel.

Commenting on this decision, Peskov said, “We have and are functioning a whole set of countermeasures, they will also be mirrored by our side. We still believe that this is illegal from the point of view of international law, and most importantly, sanctions have never led the initiators to achieve their goals.”

Peskov stressed that Russia has just perfectly adapted to the existing economic conditions. Moreover, he said, it has learned to benefit from this in terms of developing its own production “with its import substitution and so on.”
