‘Memory Squadron’ Held in Sevastopol on Victory Day

Dozens of ships sailed along the Sevastopol Bay as part of the “Memory Squadron” action. Yachts and boats carried on their sides the names of ships that had gone during the Great Patriotic War, TASS reports. For Sevastopol, May 9 is not only the Day of Victory in the Great Patriotic War but also the anniversary of the liberation of the city from the Nazi occupation.

“The people’s memory will forever remain the unparalleled feats of fortitude and courage of glorious sailors and pilots, marines and air defence fighters, and today the personnel of the fleet continue the heroic traditions of front-line soldiers with dignity, strengthening the security of the Russian Federation on its southern maritime borders,” the fleet commander, Vice Admiral Igor Osipov, said.

About 20 companies and battalions marched in the parade. Among the parade participants were both military personnel and students of the Sevastopol State University and the Maritime Academy, guys from the Yunarmiya units (“Young Army”) and the Artek international children’s centre. The column of military equipment was led by the T-34 tank which was involved in the Crimean liberation operation in 1944. The column also included Bastion mobile coastal missile systems, S-400 Triumf launchers, Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile and cannon systems, T-72B3 tanks, BTR-82 armoured personnel carriers, Grad multiple rocket launchers and lots of other military equipment.

In addition, unmanned aerial vehicles from a separate reconnaissance brigade of the Black Sea Fleet were transported aboard two trucks. For the first time at the parade in Sevastopol, the newest sanitary armoured vehicle “Linza” designed to search, collect and remove the wounded from the battlefield, took part. As part of the “Squadron of Memory” more than 80 ships carried banners on their sides with the names of the ships that participated in hostilities on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. The squadron also included yachts with teams from the Crimea and Sevastopol, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Kazan and other cities.
