The monument to the defenders of the Fatherland who died in 1969 as a result of the border incident on the Ussuri River was opened in Vladivostok today, on April 24, 2021. The names of the senior lieutenants of the 57th frontier detachment, the Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously) Ivan Strelnikov, and the Commander of the Order of the Red Banner (posthumously) Nikolay Buinevich are carved on the monument.
According to the press service of the Vladivostok government on its VK page, the monument to the defenders of the Fatherland is dedicated to the Head of the frontier post, Senior Lieutenant Ivan Strelnikov, and the operative of the special department of the KGB under the USSR Council of Ministers, Senior Lieutenant Nikolay Buinevich, who heroically died on March 2, 1969, on Damansky Island (also known as Zhenbao Island). The monument was made by the team of the Grekov studio of military artists. The author of the project is the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, sculptor Mikhail Pereyaslavets.
It is noted that after the opening ceremony, a capsule with the consecrated ground was laid at the base of the monument, which was brought from Damansky Island. In the near future, the names of all the heroes will be inscribed on the monument. According to the organizers, it will become a symbol of courage, fortitude, and heroism of the defenders of the Fatherland.
