Specialists of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VTsIOM) presented the data from a survey of Russians about their interest in museums, timed to coincide with International Museum Day which is traditionally celebrated on May 18.
According to the research results, slightly less than half of Russians (46 per cent) were in a museum several years ago, 23 per cent went to a museum a year or two ago, 6 per cent were there within the last year, 4 per cent six months ago, 11 per cent within 2-3 months (total 21 per cent over the last year). It is specified that Muscovites and Petersburgers (42 per cent), citizens of 18-24 years old (38 per cent), 35-44 years old (26 per cent), as well as Russians with higher and incomplete higher education (31 per cent) visited museums more often than others over the past year.
In addition, more than half of Russians (70per cent) have heard about the opportunity to visit museums online. The residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg (87 per cent), million-plus cities (78 per cent), and cities with a population of 500 to 950 thousand people (80 per cent), as well as respondents with higher and incomplete higher education (82 per cent) are more often aware of this. In turn, about a third of Russians (30 per cent) do not know about such a possibility.
It is also reported that three-quarters of the surveyed (75 per cent) have never visited a museum online, while 24 per cent of respondents have such an experience. Among those who have ever visited museums online, 38 per cent are residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg, 30 per cent are residents of million-plus cities, 29 per cent each are active Internet users and citizens of 45-59 years old, and 27 per cent each are respondents of 25-34 and 35-44 years old.
