Nizhny Novgorod Women Live Longer Than Men

At the beginning of 2020, 132 long-lived women lived in the Nizhny Novgorod region, NewsNN reported with reference to the regional state statistics service (Nizhegorodstat). According to the data provided, at the beginning of 2020, there were 1.7 million women in the region, which is about 55 per cent of the total local population. Of these, 81 per cent are city dwellers, and every fifth woman lives in the countryside.

It is noted that over ten years the number of women who are of working age has decreased from 53.5 per cent to 48.5 per cent. Of these, 36 per cent of the region’s residents are already retired, and another 15 per cent are young women. It is also specified that female inhabitants of the region have a higher life expectancy than local men. At the end of 2019, the life expectancy of women was 78 years, which is 11 years more than that of men.

However, fewer girls are born in the region than boys, but by the age of 35-39 the difference in numbers is gradually levelling off. And already in the age group 60 years and older, women are 2 times more than men. In addition, it turned out that at the end of 2019, 63.8 per cent of children born were born to women 25-34 years old. Thus, the average age of a Nizhny Novgorod mother is now close to 29 years, while ten years ago it was 27 years old.

In the professional field, women predominate in health care and social services (85.7 per cent), education (82.0 per cent), financial and insurance activities (68.0 per cent), as well as in wholesale and retail trade (65.4 per cent). The least of all female residents are in the construction industry, where there is only one woman for 9 men.
