The Finnish company “Nokia” has asked the USA and Finland for export licenses for the supply of telecom equipment to Russia to fulfill previously concluded contracts. Such measures are necessary for the company’s final withdrawal from the Russian market.
Nokia has reportedly sent a request to the US Bureau of Industry and Security, as well as to the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As explained, permission from the USA is required due to the ownership of part of the patents of the American company Alcatel-Lucent. Suppliers must obtain such licenses within the framework of the sanctions imposed against Russia.
It is noted that it is going only about the supply of spare parts, but not about equipment for expanding the network. According to the source of the RBC news agency, negotiations on obtaining documents are at the final stage. When the company’s obligations are completed, Nokia plans to completely withdraw from Russia. It is expected that it may take about a year after obtaining export licenses.
As reminded, Nokia announced its withdrawal from the Russian market on August 29, 2022. According to the representative of the company, the official presence of the brand in Russia will remain until the legal closure is completed. Reportedly, by the end of the year, the vast majority of Nokia employees in Russia will leave the company and all offices will be vacated.
