Voronezh specialists have begun to create a command and control aircraft in the event of a nuclear war, RIA Novosti reports with reference to its source in the country’s Military Industrial Complex.
It is expected that the Russian Aerospace Forces will receive two air command posts based on the Il-96-400M aircraft. One of them is already in production. According to a source of the agency, in the future, it will be possible to order a third air control centre.
It is noted that “Doomsday planes” are designed to evacuate the country’s top leadership and command and control troops in the event of the destruction of ground and satellite infrastructure. They will replace the existing four Il-80 planes built on the basis of the passenger Il-86 aircraft.
It is also specified that the flight range of the new Il-96-400M will double in comparison with its predecessor. They will be able to refuel in the air and will be accompanied by fighters during a flight. The aircraft’s radio complex will make it possible to deliver orders to the troops carrying strategic nuclear weapons within a radius of six thousand kilometres.
