Over 2.500 Operations Using Gamma Knife were Performed at Sklifosovsky Institute

At the Sklifosovsky Institute, 2660 operations were performed using the Gamma Knife high-tech apparatus. New equipment is used to treat benign and malignant brain tumours.

According to the director of the N. V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine Sergey Petrikov, a gamma knife is used in cases where surgical intervention is impossible.

“At the same time, our specialists have already developed several of their own methods of conducting operations, which can increase the effectiveness of treatment using a gamma knife and reduce the likelihood of radiation reactions in the patient,” said Sergey.

He noted that several patients are treated with gamma rays daily. Expenses are fully paid from the city budget.

The first operation with a gamma knife at the Sklifosovsky Institute took place in the spring of 2016. Doctors use gamma rays to destroy the DNA of diseased cells. The operation takes place on an outpatient basis, while the patient is not hospitalized, according to the official website of the Moscow Mayor.
