The JSC “Information Satellite Systems” named after Academician M. F. Reshetnev, which is a part of the ‘Roscosmos’ state space corporation, together with its partners is developing a medical complex of radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer patients. The first samples will be ready in two years, TASS reported.
It is noted that at the moment, the design is being developed, an upgraded version of the betatron (particle accelerator) and the design of the installation, which could work in operating rooms, would be quite mobile, and not very heavy from the point of view of special requirements. It is assumed that the betatron of the medical complex will have a power of 12 MeV to smoothly adjust depending on the application.
It is specified that the development is being carried out in cooperation with the Tomsk Polytechnic University (developing a betatron and its control system) and the Tomsk National Research Medical Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (issues installation requirements, characteristics, and methods for working with the device). In the future, the Polyus company can also join the project.
