A group of countries at the UN calls for the mechanism provided for in Article 6 of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) to be activated because of the US military-biological activities in Ukraine, as stated by the Deputy Head of the Russian delegation at a meeting of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly Konstantin Vorontsov.
Among the countries that are concerned about the activities of the US are Belarus, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Syria, and Russia.
“In order to resolve the current situation, we urge you to use all the possibilities available under the BTWC, including the mechanism of Article 6 of the Convention,” Vorontsov said.
In a statement read out at the meeting by Vorontsov, it is emphasized that questions remain unanswered about the actions of the US in Ukraine.
“We state that there are still questions about the military biological activities of the United States in the context of the functioning of biological laboratories on Ukrainian territory. They have not received complete answers that would be able to finally dispel doubts in connection with this activity and thus resolve the situation,” Vorontsov said.
According to Article 6 of the BTWC, “any State Party to the Convention that finds that any other State Party acts in violation of obligations arising from the provisions of the Convention may file a complaint with the UN Security Council.”
