On April 29, 2021, the Russian diplomatic mission in Sofia announced that Bulgaria had declared the assistant military attache persona non grata. According to the Russian Ambassador in Bulgaria, Eleonora Mitrofanova, this has happened because the US side set the task of “squeezing Russia out of all spheres of Bulgarian life” to the country’s authorities, RIA Novosti reports.
She stressed, however, that Russia and Bulgaria are connected by “powerful layers of history, a spiritual kinship that cannot be crossed out or changed”. Mitrofanova considers the goal of the US to separate Russia and Bulgaria utopian since the two countries are connected by Orthodoxy and Cyrillic, the Russian-Turkish war and the liberation of Bulgaria from the Turkish yoke.
“I must say that Bulgarians are very sensitive to the memory of this war. There are 670 monuments to the heroes of the Russian-Turkish War in Bulgaria. Avenues and streets of cities are named after heroes, Russian heroes of this war. Despite all the attempts to rewrite history, despite the current Euro-Atlantic orientation of the country, these powerful roots will never allow our two peoples to be torn apart,” concluded the Ambassador.
It is stated that Moscow will not leave unfriendly actions of Bulgaria unanswered, as said by the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, commenting on the expulsion of an employee of the Russian diplomatic mission in Sofia.
