A joint statement between China and Russia, which has not been very well perceived by the West because everybody was looking to Ukraine, may be the foundation stone of a big alliance of two authoritarian regimes, as the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, said.

The recent joint statement, adopted by Russia and China, can become a foundation for a powerful alliance between the two countries, as Borrell told reporters in the US on Tuesday, February 8, 2022.
“A joint statement between China and Russia, which has not been very well perceived because everybody was looking to Ukraine, may be the foundation stone of a big alliance of two authoritarian regimes. This is, for sure, is going to be the big fight of the century, the fight between democracies and authoritarian regimes,” he said.
In a document published on Friday, February 4, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, emphasized that “the attempts of individual states to impose their democratic standards on other countries, to assign themselves the monopoly right to assess the level of compliance with the criteria of democracy, to draw dividing lines between the ideological principles, including through the creation of narrow-format blocs and situational alliances, actually represent an example of trampling on democracy and the absence of its spirit and true values.”
The parties stated that they oppose the abuse of democratic values, interference in the internal affairs of sovereign States under the pretext of protecting democracy and human rights, as well as attempts to provoke division and confrontation in the world. They emphasized that “the protection of democracy and human rights should not be used as an instrument of pressure on other countries.”
The Russia-China joint statement came shortly after the US State Department’s Spokesperson, Ned Price, threatened Chinese businesses with economic punishment if they decide to work with Russia through any hypothetical sanctions imposed by Joe Biden. He warned that the US has “an array of tools” that can be used again foreign companies “doing their best to backfill US export control actions.”
However, as seen from the written above, China did not show any fear of the announced threats and moreover, it made a joint statement with Russia, which evidently made the EU think about the further development of the events.
