The largest collection of lilacs in Russia, numbering 378 varieties, was collected with the help of a Scientific and Educational Centre in Belgorod, TASS reported with reference to the director of the botanical garden of the Belgorod State National Research University Valery Tokhtar.
In 2018, a nursery was laid in Belgorod, on the basis of which it was planned to create one of the most diverse varietal collections of lilacs. The project, aimed at solving the shortage of high-quality planting material, was continued in the form of developing new approaches to studying plants under the ‘Nauka’ national project. It is noted that the development of the project should preserve rare plant species and help to develop their new varieties.
According to the goals of the project, in 2024 Russia should become one of the five leading countries carrying out research and development in areas determined by the priorities of scientific and technological development. It is specified that the main work has been already completed and at the moment, the collection of lilacs includes 378 varieties of domestic and foreign selection. This is the largest collection in the CIS and Eastern Europe.
