The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, on Monday, February 21, after an extraordinary large meeting of the Security Council, addressed the citizens of the country and said that he considers it necessary to make a decision to immediately recognize the sovereignty of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
“Those who embarked on the path of bloodshed, violence, lawlessness, did not recognize and do not recognize any other solution of Donbass, except the military. In this regard, I consider it necessary to take a long-overdue decision – to immediately recognize the independence of the DPR and the LPR,” Putin said in an address to the Russians.
Immediately after the televised address, the President signed decrees in the Kremlin: first, the decree of the President of the Russian Federation on the recognition of the Donetsk People’s Republic, then the decree on the recognition of the Lugansk People’s Republic. The signing ceremony of the decrees was attended by the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin and the head of the LPR Leonid Pasechnik. In addition, Putin promised to sign friendship and cooperation agreements with the republics.
In Donetsk, excited people took to the streets to celebrate Putin’s decision.
The recognition of the LPR by Russia in Lugansk was marked by a car rally.
According to the Deputy Head of the Defence Committee of the Russian State Duma, Dmitry Sablin, following Russia, the DPR and the LPR will be recognized by allies and friends too.
