Russia Recognized Kherson and Zaporozhye as Independent Territories

Russia recognized the independence of the former Ukraine’s regions, Kherson and Zaporozhye, which decided to break away from Ukraine. Russia’s decision follows from the decrees of Russian President, Vladimir Putin, published on Friday on the official portal of legal information.

“In accordance with the generally recognized principles and norms of international law, recognizing and confirming the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, taking into account the will of the people of the Kherson region at the referendum held on September 27, 2022, I decide: Recognize the state sovereignty and independence of the Kherson region,” as follows from the decree on the recognition of the Kherson region.

In a similar document, the decree states the President’s decision to “recognize the state sovereignty and independence of the Zaporozhye region.”

As noted, the plane with the heads of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions arrived in Moscow on September 28, 2022. Earlier, they all turned to President Putin with a request to accept their regions into Russia.

The signing ceremony of the relevant agreements will take place on Friday, September 30 at 3 pm in the Grand Kremlin Palace.
