Large-scale exercises of the Russian Pacific Fleet have been started in the central part of the Pacific Ocean, TASS reports with reference to the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defence. It is noted that the naval tactical groups of the Pacific Fleet, having made a transition of about 4 thousand kilometres from their bases and areas of duty, deployed a grouping of fleet forces in the designated area of the Pacific Ocean to carry out training tasks.
The press service clarified that up to 20 surface warships, submarines and support vessels were involved in the exercises, including the flagship of the fleet, the Guards Order of Nakhimov, the Varyag missile cruiser, the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleev, the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, the corvettes “Gromky”, “Sovershennyy”, and “Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov”, as well as the ship of the measuring complex “Marshal Krylov”. Also, about 20 aircraft are involved in the exercises, including long-range anti-submarine aircraft Tu-142M3, high-altitude fighter-interceptors MiG-31BM, and other aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
During the exercise, the tasks of controlling a heterogeneous grouping of forces at a considerable distance from the basing points during the protection and defence of sea (ocean) communications, as well as organizing the interaction of the operational grouping of ships and aviation in search and tracking of submarines and naval groupings of the imaginary enemy, are practised. The general management of the exercises is carried out by the commander of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Sergei Avakyants.
