Russia has clearly expressed its position on the possible accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO, as stated by the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

“Brussels, under the auspices of the US, has been drawing these countries into its structures for a long time. Actual retraction measures were carried out. There is nothing new here. Another thing is, if they go this way, it will, of course, change the geopolitical situation in Europe, in the immediate vicinity of our country,” Zakharova said.
According to Zakharova, Moscow’s opinion on the issue was conveyed to Stockholm and Helsinki both publicly and through bilateral channels, so “they will have nothing to be surprised about, they have been informed about everything, what it will lead to.”
As reminded, Russia has negatively assessed the idea of two new members joining NATO. In particular, the press secretary of the President, Dmitry Peskov, called the entry of Sweden and Finland into the alliance an existential threat to the country. According to Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, Moscow should be ready for aggressive actions by NATO against the background of attempts to expand its presence at the Russian borders.
