The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, stated that US lawmakers who are proposing a set of sanctions on 35 Russian individuals are attempting to ruin the relationship between the two countries.
“It is honestly puzzling, the maniacal persistence with which local legislators are trying to ruin Russian-US relations. The new attempt to impose sanctions on 35 Russians under completely far-fetched pretences is a striking confirmation of this,” Antonov said.
As reminded, in late September of this year, the US House of Representatives’ Rules Committee approved legislation that would recommend sanctions against 35 Russian individuals, including Russia’s Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin, Moscow Mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, as well as the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov and many other officials.
Antonov said the proposed sanctions are a way for US lawmakers to give voters the illusion of a fight with the US enemies instead of focusing on domestic problems. He also called on members of Congress to abandon the “destructive approaches and throw off their anti-Russian blinders,” and engage in constructive, mutually respectful dialogues with Russia to address global challenges.
Previously, the Kremlin Spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, has also commented on the sanctions, stressing that it’s not a secret for anyone “there are a huge number of people in the Congress” who are “fiercely dislike our country” but such “internal parliamentary exercises need to go a very long way in order for them to be formalized”.
In addition, the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, emphasized that any “sanctions decisions,” which were made bypassing the UN Security Council, are illegitimate from the international legal stance, TASS reported.
“On the whole, this is how they must be treated. There is certainly a political overtone. These are sanctions games, these are the real sanctions games of the European Union,” she said, adding that this is a pure example of hypocrisy.
As the condition for lifting individual and economic sanctions, the EU cites full compliance with the Minsk agreements, ignoring the fact that Ukraine fully sabotages them. As Zakharova said, while the EU calls on Russia to implement the Minsk Agreements in full, it at the same time gives Kiev a corresponding signal with their anti-Russian sanctions to restrain Russia and somehow reprove it.
“It is deeply regrettable because they [sanctions] are completely politically motivated, have nothing to do with the law and contradict the law. They were approved on the eve of the Ukraine-EU summit, which took place on October 12, while the decisions were made on October 11. It was also a signal for Kiev, which supports sabotaging the Minsk Agreements,” Zakharova noted.
Zakharova said that the illegal restrictions on behalf of the EU also affected the staff of the Russian judicial bodies, which is, according to her, an open attempt to exert pressure on the Russian judicial authorities, “independently and impartially executing their duties.”
“We will certainly respond to such an unfriendly step on behalf of the European Union,” the Diplomat promised.
