Russian Charity Fund to Provide Sick Children With World’s Most Expensive Medicine

The Russian charitable foundation “Krug Dobra” (“Circle of Good”) will purchase the most expensive medicine in the world, Zolgensma. for the treatment of children with spinal muscular atrophy. The press service of the country’s Ministry of Health clarified that yesterday, on December 9, this drug was registered for official use in Russia.

Spinal muscular atrophy is a severe hereditary neuromuscular disease that eventually deprives a patient of the ability to move, swallow, and even breathe. It is possible to stop its development if a child under the age of two is injected with Zolgensma once, one injection of which costs 121 million rubles.

The foundation has been established in Russia to support children with severe life-threatening and chronic or/and rare diseases. The decree on its creation was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on January 5, 2021. Funds are received at the expense of increased personal income tax for citizens whose incomes exceed 5 million rubles a year.

In total, 1,900 seriously ill children with different nosologies receive help from the foundation today, as reported by its head, Archpriest Alexander Tkachenko. According to him, in total, the fund buys 37 expensive medicines for its wards, 23 of which are not registered in Russia, as well as 5 types of medical devices. This year, 38 billion rubles were spent on their purchase.
