Russian Fighter Jet Escorted US Air Force Bomber Over Sea of Japan

The Russian MiG-31 fighter jet escorted a US Air Force B-1B strategic bomber over the Sea of Japan on Sunday, October 17, according to the Russian Defence Control Centre. As specified, the Russian airspace controls detected a target approaching the border over the neutral waters of the sea and lifted a MiG-31 into the air from the duty forces of the Eastern Military District to identify it.

“The crew of the Russian fighter identified the aerial target as a B-1B strategic bomber of the US Air Force and escorted it over the waters of the Sea of Japan […] Violations of the state border of the Russian Federation have not been allowed,” the message stated.

It was also stressed that the flight of the Russian aircraft was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace. It should be reminded that the statement by the Russian ministry was announced just a few days after another incident in the Sea of Japan has occurred, when the US Navy destroyer Chafee (DDG-90) approached Russian territory and attempted to cross the border. However, a large anti-submarine warfare ship, the Admiral Tributs of the Russian Pacific Fleet, managed to protect the territory.
