The Russian flag is lowered over the Russian Embassy in Kiev.
Also, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has published an appeal to its citizens with a request to leave Russia “immediately,” as due to the crisis, it is possible to limit the provision of consular assistance.
In addition, Ukraine’s president Zelensky later reported that he had received a request from the country’s Foreign Ministry about severing diplomatic relations with Russia, and promised to consider it. No decision has been made yet, but the charge d’affaires of Ukraine in Russia, Vasyl Pokotilo, was already summoned to Kiev for consultation.
Earlier today, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the evacuation of diplomats and their families from Ukraine, which follows from the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
“In order to protect their lives and safety, the Russian leadership decided to evacuate the personnel of Russian foreign institutions in Ukraine, which will be implemented in the very near future,” the message says.
The Ministry recalled that since 2014, the Embassy and Consulates General of Russia in Kiev, Odessa, Lviv, and Kharkiv have been repeatedly attacked. Russian diplomats have received death threats more than once, and their cars have been set on fire. At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities did not pay attention to what was happening, that is why now Russia have to ensure its diplomats’ safety by itself.
