The solemn ceremony of raising the flag of Russia was held on the first serial universal nuclear icebreaker “Siberia” today, on Tuesday, January 25, at the Atomflot berth in Murmansk.
According to the Deputy Director of Rosatom Corporation, Vyacheslav Ruksha, it is impossible to imagine the dynamic development of the Arctic without a modern nuclear icebreaker fleet. He added that only new icebreakers and vessels will be able to make the Northern Sea Route a road for projects in the Arctic zone.
The General Director of Atomflot, Mustafa Kashka, said that navigation in the eastern area of the Northern Sea Route usually stopped in November, but the commissioning of icebreakers of the 22220 project opened up new prospects for development in this sector.
“The shipbuilders of the Baltic Shipyard are confident that these icebreakers will prove themselves as reliable and efficient equipment capable of adequately serving in the most extreme conditions of the north,” the General Director of the Baltic Shipyard, Alexey Kadilov, said.
He expressed the wish that the line of nuclear icebreakers of the 22220 project would not be limited to five orders.
As reminded, the icebreaker “Siberia” of project 22220 was laid in May 2015 in St. Petersburg. The ship was launched in September 2017. The icebreaker arrived at the Atomflot berth on January 22, 2022.
