Russian-American negotiations on security guarantees will take place immediately after the New Year holidays, as announced by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, on Monday, December 27, 2021.
“The main thing is, as the President said, that there is no chatter so that our proposals are not muddled in endless discussions about what the West is famous for and what it knows how to do, and so that there is a result of all these diplomatic efforts. The result is, moreover, in a certain period of time, we do not put forward any ultimatums, but endless negotiations, during which the West will again begin to promise something ambiguously, and then it will definitely deceive,” the Minister said.
He added that, in this regard, the US is Russia’s main negotiator.
“it is with the United States that we will carry out the main work of the negotiations, which will take place immediately after the end of the New Year holidays,” Lavrov said.
The Minister also recalled that NATO had proposed “through Stoltenberg’s mouth,” but “it is clear that this is at the suggestion of the US,” to hold a meeting of the Russia-NATO council. Earlier it was reported that NATO Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, proposed to convene a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council on January 12, 2022.
Lavrov further continued saying that the negotiations between Russia and the US on security guarantees will take place with the participation of the military.
“The negotiations will be conducted by interdepartmental delegations with the participation of the Foreign Ministry, with the participation of the military, as far as the United States is concerned. With regard to NATO, we warned them that since they had frozen practical military activities since 2014 and were only limited to periodic phone calls to the chief of the General Staff, we said that the conversation would make sense only with the direct participation of the military,” the Minister stressed.
Lavrov also specified that “the negotiator will not be Stoltenberg, who is, in fact, the chief administrative officer of the North Atlantic Alliance secretariat, but, of course, these will be key members of the bloc, including the US.”
