Russian military personnel conducted eight search expeditions last year to find those missing during the Great Patriotic War, TASS reports with reference to Russian Defence Minister, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu. According to him, 1,593 search teams are now registered in Russia, that is more than 48 thousand people.
Shoigu stressed that for many years the Ministry of Defence has been taking serious measures to ensure the safety of military memorial sites. Thus, since 2019, the federal programme “Perpetuating the Memory of Those Killed in the Defence of the Fatherland” has been successfully implemented which provides for the repair, improvement, and reconstruction of memorials and graves of soldiers.
He recalled that last year, at the initiative of the Ministry of Defence criminal liability was introduced for the desecration of military graves and monuments to the defenders of the Fatherland and amendments were made to Russian legislation giving the subjects of the Russian Federation powers to perpetuate the memory of those who died for their Fatherland and the maintenance of military graves on their territories. In addition, the coordination and control of the search work are carried out to exclude the activities of the tomb raiders.
