Russian Mobile Operators to Cancel Roaming Charges for Compatriots in Kazakhstan

Russian mobile operators will temporarily cancel international roaming charges for Russian subscribers who were or are in Kazakhstan. This is the initiative of the country’s State Duma Committee.

Members of the Russian State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications appealed to the Ministry of Finance of Russia and leading telecom operators with a proposal to cancel international roaming charges for Russian subscribers in Kazakhstan from January 5 to 19, 2022, according to the Chairman of the Committee, Alexander Khinstein, in his Telegram channel.

According to him, having got into emergency conditions, the Russians were forced to call Russian diplomatic missions, airlines for a long time, and repeatedly contact relatives and friends. In the conditions of international roaming, all this resulted in significant costs for people.

“We have previously worked out our proposals with the leadership of the Ministry of Finance of Russia and received support. We hope that by this evening our colleagues will have worked out an algorithm for their implementation. It is important not to create opportunities for abuse for both subscribers and operators. The limit of free calls and SMS with Russia is proposed to be set within 2 hours a day. Those who have already paid for roaming should be recalculated and the funds spent will be credited for future payments,” Khinstein specified.
