Russian New Generation Equipment Received New Name

The Russian equipment of the new generation, which is being developed as a replacement for the “Ratnik” and “Sotnik” kits, will be called “Legioner” (“Legionnaire”), as reported by RIA Novosti with reference to its source in the military-industrial complex.

“A decision has been made on the name for the promising equipment of the soldier of the future. If the previous generations of equipment were called ‘native Russian’ names — ‘Ratnik’ and ‘Sotnik’, then the new project has received a more ‘international’ name — ‘Legionnaire’,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

He recalled that more than 10 years have passed since the start of the “Ratnik” project. Despite the fact that the kit turned out to be successful, the creation of new equipment is required due to the demands of the present time. New technologies and materials have appeared, and the specifics of warfare have also changed.

As reminded, in August of this year, a representative of the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering said that the appearance of the equipment of the soldier of the future will be determined in 2023.

The version of the Russian vestments of the “soldier of the future” was first presented at the exhibition “Army 2018”. “Legioner”, or “Ratnik-3”, reminded then Western experts of the imperial storm trooper from the fantastic epic “Star Wars”.

As it became known then, portable miniature unmanned aerial vehicles were planned to be built into the suit, which will help the serviceman to better navigate when fighting in the city or in the forest. A container with a drone is no bigger than a magazine for an assault rifle, so a fighter can take 3-4 such mini-drones with him and launch them for reconnaissance. A fighter controls the drone using a tablet, and the broadcast of the “picture” is transmitted to the entire group that participates in the operation.

The modular helmet with a transparent visor displays information about the combat situation and automatic identification of “friend or foe”.

Another innovation of the equipment is an electronic module for assessing the functional state of a serviceman, which registers in real time the pulse and respiratory rate, an electrocardiogram, and blood pressure of a soldier.

The sensors promptly transmit a signal about the probable loss of combat capability to the tablet of the unit commander. The module determines the severity of the injury and the condition of a serviceman. Using this data, the unit commander transmits reports on sanitary losses and the location of the wounded.

In addition, given the degree of injury, anti-shock drugs can be administered to the fighter, which will allow him to hold out until receiving the first medical aid. If such assistance is provided in the first 15-20 minutes, the survival rate among military personnel who have received even severe injuries will be very high.

Experts also consider the integration of a modular helmet with an anti-shatter transparent visor into the “armor of the future” to be a successful solution. The helmet shows the fighter where the mine-explosive barriers and firing points are located. The guidance system allows accurately aiming the weapon at the target, which means saving ammunition. Such a helmet will also be equipped with thermal imaging cameras that will assess the situation around a soldier online.
