Russian President Warns World of Preventing Terrorists From Infiltrating Afghanistan’s Neighbouring Countries

According to the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, on a Friday’s joint press conference with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, the world has to accept the realities of the situation in Afghanistan and come together to prevent the collapse of the entire state, RT reports.

“The Taliban control virtually the entire country, including the capital […]. This is reality,” Putin stated.

Russian President noted that the Taliban have announced the end of combat operations, started restoring public order and promised to guarantee the security of local residents and foreign diplomatic missions, for which Putin expressed his deep hopes. The President also addressed the West stressing that it’s absolutely wrong “to impose” foreign values on Afghanistan and try “to build democracies in other countries according to someone else’s model”.

Speaking on Sunday as part of a meeting with members of the governing United Russia party in the run-up to parliamentary elections next month, the President called on the world to turn its efforts to prevent terrorists from infiltrating Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries in the guise of refugees.

“Who are these refugees? How can we tell? There may be thousands or even millions,” Putin said. “The border is a thousand kilometres – they will get in by anything, a car, even a donkey, and flee across the steppe.”

According to the Russian President, this poses a potential security threat and “is a direct concern” for Russians. Recalling a number of terrorist attacks driven by separatism in majority-Muslim regions in the country’s south two decades ago, Putin insisted that Russians “do not want to repeat what happened in the 90s and mid-2000s” in their country.

It is noted that in 2016, the President instructed Russia’s top domestic security agency (FSB) to keep an eye on those arriving in the country as refugees.

“The cause of this refugee crisis is the destabilization of entire regions of the world, first of all in the Middle East,” Putin stated and ordered the country’s officials to “safely close the territory of Russia” from penetration and to “uncover and neutralize” terrorists.
