Sailors of the Russian Northern Fleet rescued a container ship under the flag of Panama from pirates in the Gulf of Guinea, as reported by the press service of the country’s Ministry of Defenсe. As specified, the ship “Lucia” was sailing from the Republic of Togo to the Republic of Cameroon when it was suddenly attacked by the pirates.
As reported, the crew of the vessel that was attacked, gave a distress signal. A Ka-27PS helicopter with a marine unit and a large anti-submarine ship “Vice-Admiral Kulakov” went to the scene of the emergency. As a result of the actions of the Russian military, the pirates escaped, and the crew of the container ship was released. Later, the anti-terror group from the Russian ship landed onboard the container ship and carried out an inspection of the vessel.
It is noted that since October 6, a detachment of ships and vessels of the Russian Northern Fleet consisting of the large anti-submarine ship Vice Admiral Kulakov, the medium sea tanker Akademik Pashin and the rescue tugboat Altai have been operating in the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean, ensuring the safety of civil navigation by monitoring the surface situation with the help of deck aircraft.
