Russian Scientists Created New Material for 3D Printing

Specialists of the National Research Centre “Kurchatov Institute” have developed a composite material that makes it possible to create components for power plants and medical devices using 3D printing technology, TASS reports.

Scientists have developed a new slurry formulation for making ceramic products using 3D printing technology. The materials obtained have an optimal combination of mechanical and electrically conductive properties, which makes them promising for the manufacture of components for energy and medical devices. The results of scientific work are published in the Journal of the European Ceramic Society.

It is specified that the basis of the material in the form of a suspension is the powder of stabilized zirconium oxide. Using a 3D printer, scientists “grew” a part from a liquid mass layer by layer giving it the desired shape. This production technology can be used in the manufacture of components of systems of complex shapes, which cannot be created using traditional equipment (for example, in the manufacture of components for the composition of fuel cells of new generations).
