Scientists at Tomsk Polytechnic University developed a strategy for the joint utilization of industrial and municipal wastes by burning them as part of composite fuel, which will help to save more money than using traditional coal, RIA News reports. The results of the study are published in the journal Energies.
Composite fuel is a modern perspective energy resource of thermal power plants, which is used instead of coal to generate electric and thermal energy. These are mixtures of different components, the content of which varies widely depending on specific tasks. The involvement of new energy resources in the fuel and energy complex can reduce coal consumption since it is much more efficient to use it in metallurgy and the chemical industry.
Associate Professor of the University’s Research School, Dmitry Glushkov, noted that in most countries with a developed raw materials sector, regions, where minerals are mined, are surrounded by regions with a high level of industrial and social development. The neighbourhood creates favourable conditions for the extraction of raw materials and energy resources, the development of enterprises and an increase in population.
According to the scientist, the positive economic effect will be up to $ 6.9 billion, or 78 per cent of the main costs compared with the operating conditions of three typical TPPs over 25 years on coal.
