The cause of human biological ageing was found in mitochondria, which are the so-called “power stations” of living cells. The discovery was made by scientists at Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov under the leadership of academician Vladimir Skulachev, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
It is noted that mitochondria produce both useful energy and toxic substances. The older a person becomes, the greater the critical mass of such substances becomes, as mitochondria damage proteins and introduce mutations into DNA.
“According to our hypothesis, a coordinated increase in the production of reactive oxygen species during ageing should be programmed in some way in the body,” scientists explained.
Experts managed to find a special mechanism in mitochondria that prevents the production of reactive oxygen species. Until a certain age, this anti-ageing program in cells works well, but then it just stops working, and the body begins to weaken rapidly. Now, researchers have to study this issue in more detail.
