Russian Scientists to Analyze Country Residents’ Psychological State on Social Media

The Russian authorities are interested in using artificial intelligence to analyze the psychological state of Russians on their social media accounts. The Ivannikov Institute for System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISP RAS) received a grant for research in this area from the State Analytical Centre.

According to the results of the work, a psychodiagnostic technology should appear based on the analysis of social network profile data. It is designed to help fight death groups, the involvement of citizens in terrorist activities and extremism. However, according to lawyers, the use of such technology may contradict the current legislation on the protection of personal data.

As reported, on November 23, the ISP announced a tender worth 36 million rubles to conduct a study on the possibilities of using artificial intelligence for psychological personality diagnostics on social networks. The results of the competition will be announced today, on November 29, 2021. The contractor must complete the work by September 1, 2024.

In the tender documentation, the customer notes that the spread of technologies using digital traces for personality analysis “opens up wide opportunities for assessing personality and predicting its behaviour without psychological testing requiring its voluntary consent.”

Artificial intelligence technologies are supposed to be used to analyze accounts in social networks. The programme of the ISP RAS research Centre provides, among other things, the creation of a trusted technology for diagnosing personality traits. It is explained that it’s planned to use it to assess the state of persons making key government or corporate decisions, as well as “recognition of manipulative management of large social groups, assessment of the creative potential of employees and modelling of their professional development.”
