In Russia, by the end of this year, it is planned to adopt a law that expands the possibilities of using biometric data. In particular, about payments in shops and cafes based on face recognition, Izvestia reports. However, to date, the state unified biometric system is allowed to be used only for remote opening of deposits.
In some Lenta hypermarkets, an experiment on paying for purchases using a face recognition, launched by VTB Bank, is already underway. The new payment system is also planned to be launched by the Coffee Bean chain, Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, and Karusel stores.
It is noted that payment for purchases in this way is possible, even if a buyer has forgotten money and card at home or his smartphone is discharged. It is also specified that the use of biometrics can reduce the number of employees in stores.
