The Russian Minister of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov, has revealed that the country is working on a new version of a ‘doomsday plane’, confirming the rumours of the replacements for the four Soviet-made Il-80 flying command posts, RT reports.
“Work in this direction is underway,” Manturov said ‘Interfax’ news agency on Sunday, August 22.
The Minister noted that the Russian aviation industry now has the capability to produce aircraft of all classes, including planes for this purpose. The new plane will be based on the new Il96-400M aircraft that has still not yet made its first flight.
It is specified that the ‘doomsday plane’ is designed to house the country’s top leaders and keep them out of harm’s way in case of an all-out nuclear war on the ground, allowing them to organize military movements from safety. All branches of the armed forces can be controlled from the aircraft. It is also stated that the new planes will replace the existing Il-80 made by the ‘Ilyushin’ aircraft manufacturer.
