Specialists from the All-Russian Public Opinion Foundation (FOM) conducted a study to find out which social networks and instant messengers are the most popular among Russians.
According to the results of a survey conducted as part of the study, the top 3 included WhatsApp (50 per cent), VKontakte (38 per cent), and Odnoklassniki (29 per cent). They are immediately followed by Instagram (28 per cent) and Telegram (22 per cent). Next in the top 10 are Tiktok (15 per cent), Facebook (14 per cent), Viber (10 per cent), and Twitter (6 per cent). It should be noted that a third of respondents do not use any of the above-mentioned applications (31 per cent).
Almost all social networks and instant messengers are more popular among women than among men, especially Odnoklassniki (35 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively) and Instagram (34 per cent and 21 per cent, respectively). Only Facebook is used equally by men and women (14 per cent each), and Telegram is more popular among men than among women (24 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively).
It is noted that young people in Russia more often use VK (70 per cent of men and 85 per cent of women). WhatsApp is also used mostly by young men (65 per cent) and women (82 per cent) but a bit less than VKontakte. Odnoklassniki is mostly used by men of 31-45 years old (28 per cent) and women of 31-45 years old (43 per cent). The biggest share of Instagram users are women of 18-30 y. o. (84 per cent) and men of the same age (42 per cent). In turn, Telegram users are mostly women of 18-30 years old (57 per cent) and men of the same age (50 per cent). TikTok is also used by young women (52 per cent) and men (25 per cent). Facebook mostly gathers users of 31-35 y. o. (20 per cent of men) and 18-30 y. o. (28 per cent of women). Most networks and messengers are more popular among more educated Russians than among less educated ones. The opposite pattern appears only for the Odnoklassniki network and the TikTok service. It is clarified that Russians with higher education most often use WhatsApp, VK, Instagram, and Telegram.
The expert also found out that Moscow is the capital of Russian Facebook, as more than a quarter (26 per cent) of its population uses this application. In other megacities, WhatsApp, VKontakte, Instagram, Telegram, and Viber gained popularity. The Odnoklassniki network is equally highly popular in large cities, small towns, and urban-type settlements. The TikTok service is also preferred mostly by residents of small towns and urban-type settlements.
