Specialists of the SuperJob job search service conducted an open survey among 3,000 representatives of the economically active population from all districts of Russia and found out which literature work they consider the best one. According to Russians, the first place deserves “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy, in the second place is “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov, and the third place took “Crime and Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoevsky.
According to the results of the study, “War and Peace” was recognised as the best work of fiction according to 12 per cent of respondents, while 11 per cent named Mikhail Bulgakov’s “The Master and Margarita” the best book to read. With a significant lag from the leaders, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment” appeared in third place (2 per cent of the survey participants chose this book).
Next on the list are the works of Russian classics “Dead Souls” by N. Gogol, “And Quiet Flows the Don” by M. Sholokhov, “The Idiot” by F. Dostoevsky, “Heart of a Dog” by M. Bulgakov, “Eugene Onegin” by A. Pushkin, and other works with a result of 1 per cent of votes. Among the works of foreign prose 1 per cent got “The Count of Monte Cristo” by A. Dumas, “The Little Prince” by A. de Saint-Exupery, “Gone with the Wind” by M. Mitchell, “1984” by G. Orwell, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by G. Marquez, and others.
Also among the best books, Russians named the Bible, “Martin Eden” by J. London, “Atlas Shrugged” by A. Rand, “The Twelve Chairs” by Ilf and Petrov, stories about Sherlock Holmes by A. C. Doyle, “Demons” by F. Dostoevsky, “The Divine Comedy” by D. Alighieri, “The Lord of the Rings” by J. Tolkien, “Two Captains” by V. Kaverin, “Three Comrades” by E. Remarque, and others.
Interestingly, men (the same as Russian President Vladimir Putin) have the novel “War and Peace” in the first place (11 per cent of votes), while women chose “The Master and Margarita” (14 per cent) most often.
