A week before the May holidays Russians spent 3 billion rubles in supermarkets for household goods and in gardening stores, which is 2 times more than in 2020. The number of transactions in these categories also doubled, according to the statistics provided by VTB‘s Acquiring Business.
In addition, spending on garden tools, according to the statistics from the First Fiscal Data Operator (First OFD), which is part of the VTB Group, increased 2.2 times over the year, and the number of transactions increased 2.3 times. In total, according to VTB acquiring, Russians spent 2.8 billion rubles in stores for household goods and summer cottages. Only in specialized stores for gardeners and truck farmers expenses of Russians increased by one and a half times by 2020 and amounted to more than 100 million rubles (an increase of almost 40 per cent in comparison to 2019), and the revenue of construction stores increased by 70 per cent compared to previous years, exceeding 50 million rubles per week.
Besides, Russians spent over 36 million rubles directly on garden tools (shovels, rakes, cultivators, lawnmowers and other garden tools) in a week, which is 2.2 times more than in 2020. Spending growth on these instruments was recorded by 60 per cent compared to 2019. In Moscow, the most noticeable increase in turnover was recorded in the segment of goods for gardening (3 times by 2020 and by 28 per cent by 2019). The pre-holiday spending of Muscovites in hardware stores has doubled by last year and by 80 per cent compared to the year before. The revenue of Moscow DIY supermarkets increased by a third compared to last year, to 460 million rubles. Also, Muscovites spent almost 2.5 million rubles on saws, trimmers, watering cans, boxes for seedlings and other garden tools, which is 63 per cent more than in the same period last year, and a quarter more than in 2019.
