Russians Increased Online Spending on New Year’s Entertainment

Russian spending on entertainment and travel around the country on New Year’s holidays exceeded 22.5 billion rubles, which is 500 million rubles more than last year, according to the statistics of VTB’s Acquiring Business from January 1 to January 8, 2021, 1rnd reports.  

It is noted that the volume of online purchases by main categories of expenses increased by a third, to 9 billion rubles. Their share in the total volume of spending has increased from 30% to 40% over the year. Also, during the New Year holidays, the most noticeable increase in Russian spending was recorded in entertainment sector (by 39% year-on-year, to 3 billion rubles), transport (by 22%, to 7.6 billion rubles), and hotels (by 15%, to 386 million rubles), as well as in shops selling alcoholic beverages (up to 346 million rubles).

In turn, residents of the country have reduced costs by a quarter (to 1.8 billion rubles) on catering establishments and by a third on travel agencies (457 million rubles). It is specified that the expenses of Russians in the regions where the most popular ski resorts are located increased by 13%. Local hotels earned twice as much as a year earlier, local restaurants by 38%, and entertainment and cultural institutions by 68%.
