Russians Let Children Choose Profession Independently

Specialists of the Rabota.ru job search service conducted a study and found out what factors influence the choice of a profession of residents of Russia and in which industries there is most often the continuity of generations preserved. 

The results of the study showed that 47 per cent of the respondents believe that the education and profession of parents have a significant impact on the education and career of children, while 53 per cent of Russians believe that everything depends on a particular person.

More than half of the respondents (56 per cent) noted that young people should choose their future profession and university for admission independently, 40 per cent of the survey participants believe that it is important for parents to find a compromise with their children in matters of choosing a profession, and only 4 per cent of respondents are sure that parents know better what profession is suitable for their children.

Experts also report that 80 per cent of the surveyed have chosen a profession that is different from the activities of their relatives. At the same time, 20 per cent of respondents indicated that they work in the same profession as their family members. Most often, intergenerational continuity is observed in manufacturing and industry (16 per cent), construction (12 per cent), medicine (11 per cent), and education (10 per cent).

Less often Russians follow their relatives working in banks, finance, and investment (8 per cent), transport and logistics (7 per cent), IT and telecom (3 per cent), security (2 per cent), restaurants and cafes (2 per cent), retail ( 1 per cent), marketing, advertising and PR (1 per cent).
